The crude spectrum

Crude oil does not have a single colour

Understanding oil

Its hue ranges from pale yellow to dark brown, even black. As a rule, the lighter a crude (the higher its API gravity), the paler it looks; the heavier and richer in resins and asphaltenes, the darker.

  • > 40° API

    Pale yellow

    Condensates and very light crudes

    E.g. Saharan Blend (Algeria), ≈ 46° API
  • 33–40° API

    Golden amber

    Light crudes

    E.g. Bonny Light (Nigeria), ≈ 35° API
  • 25–33° API

    Light brown

    Medium crudes

    E.g. Cabinda (Angola), ≈ 32° API
  • 15–25° API

    Dark brown

    Heavy crudes

    E.g. Doba (Chad), ≈ 21° API
  • < 15° API

    Black

    Extra-heavy crudes and bitumen

Rare in Africa; very viscous, they require specific processes.

Indicative values. Colour also depends on composition (sulphur, resins, asphaltenes) and on the thickness observed.
